Week 26 (02/29 - 03/04)
Who's in Mrs. Huang's classroom this week: Morning BLUE Class; Afternoon RED Class.
What Mrs. Huang wants to say to you:
Thank you all for prompt response on parent survey. You all earned our kids an extra recess (Red class took it on Friday and Blue class will take it on Monday.). I read them all and here are some quick responses to some common suggestions and comments:
1. Too much homework: to ensure our kids are learning even at home, I won't change my rules to have homework daily. However, I noticed that few of you mentioned Tuesday and Thursday are normally the days with heaviest homework load with Chinese and English homework and reading. Thus, I will try to have Chinese math homework lighter on Tuesday and Thursday. ^_^
2. Giving out Thursday's homework on Wednesday: You actually can print the entire week's homework off from our class website normally on Sunday. I won't hand out two days' homework in one day but you can print them to fit your kid's schedule. :)
3. Why do we have English math homework while we already have Chinese math homework: Just in case you didn't know, our kids learn math in Chinese BUT they take test in English. There are some terms we need to make sure students are familiar with both in Chinese and English. You know the benchmark test on math is in English too. This is why we can't take English math homework away.
Thank you all for being so supportive! Some of you mentioned that you love information, pics and videos I posted on the website, and few of you mentioned that you like the homework even though they are a lot but our kids are learning and improving. Most of you mentioned that you just LOVE this program. :) Few of you mentioned about your kids still need an hour or 2 to do homework which is really taking too long. I actually assign homework for our kids to completed both Chinese and math within 30 minutes. I know some of our students can completed them within 10 minutes but I really hope students to complete Chinese homework with stroke order that you can find on our class website. For those who do't have internet access and really want your kids to completed homework in the way I wish they do, public library is always a great place for kids to get internet access for free. If your kids still need an hour or even 2 to completed his/her homework at home, I am thinking if you want to come to my classroom after school with your kid and have him/her to completed his/her homework in my classroom. We can try this way for one week or few days to see how fast he/she can actually complete his/her homework. No worries about bothering me, I normally stay at school until at least 5 pm. The only condition is that I want you to stay with your kid in my classroom.
You may noticed that we have much more sentence writing starting last week on not only Chinese but also math. Students did a great job on writing math story in Chinese. Love reading them. Love seeing our kids are improving. ^_^

What students have done in Chinese class this week:
02/29
- Blue class get extra recess at morning from 10:20 to 10:30. Thank you all for the fast response on the parent survey. I took some pictures while kids playing outside over the extra recess. :)
- Reading: Students cut sentences off and paste them on the right spot to match the pictures. As you see the picture, you may notice that they are the same as the computer matching game I made for this topic. Yes, you are so great to notice that. It is a strategy for me to use to have students review what they have learned in different way. ^_^
- Writing: the teacher show a picture and students write down one sentence or 2 about the picture.
- Writing & speaking: students write and say the date and day during calendar time.
- Listening: Story telling before switching classes and the class is over. Just in case you didn't know, I read the big books of My Story Garden to students about 6 or 7 minutes before we switch classes and the class is over. I am trying to have the store time a little longer (for like 10 minutes) it seems too short for 6 or 7 minutes into our fulled schedule. I sometimes need to hurry to finish the story and I don't feel good that way.

2. three or four students in a group and play "heart attack" game with the word they just cut off. Students read these two sentences together and when the work shown is the same as the word just read, then they do fast to cover the pile of paper pieces. The one who cover them first won the pile.
These two are great activities for students to practice on sentence writing, speaking, and recognize the words.
Meth:
- 2nd grade music from 11:15 to 11:45 am.
- Calendar time: Students say and write the date and day. Also have short talk (about 5 minutes) about whatever students want to share.
- Activities: Student wrote dome "姐 姐 在 看 书" (Older sister is reading) and "小 狗 在 听 音 乐 " (The dog is listening to music) on a worksheet. These two sentences are also the two on weekly test. And then they cut them down to one word one piece. Students then:

03/04
This morning, after "self start" (or called bell ringer), I noticed that some students only completed few questions on the “self start” sheet. I then gave students a lesson about how this became a waste if we don't fully use the sheet. I gave students an example that the sheet is just like a candy I give them. If you eat your candy then we don't waste food, but if you just take a bite and then throw it into trash can, then you waste the candy. For some reason, a picture of how some people in the world are fighting with hunger just came up to my mind, I then showed students a short video about hunger in Africa. We then have a discussion about this issue. It was not in my lesson plan but I like how it turned out so good. Students were so willing to share their thoughts or even their experiences. I encouraged students to not waste food so just take the amount you can eat and then eat them all. And be sure to say thanks to your parents and whoever who feed you because you don't need to fight with hunger. One interesting thing I noticed is that Blue and Red class gave me different discussion directions. Blue class was kind of talking about how to help people in Africa while Red class was sharing their personal experience about how they helped those who needed helps (basically on financial) in our community. I was so happy that many students told me that they have finished their lunch on Friday after lunch. I would also love to hear if your kid(s) say thanks to you for food at home. ^_^
Chinese:
Both class completed topic 11-6. This topic is a little bit challenging for some kids, so I will so a reinforce on Monday.
