Who's in Mrs. Huang's classroom this week: Morning RED Class; Afternoon BLUE Class.
What Mrs. Huang wants to say to you:
I hope your kid enjoy the first 2 weeks of 2nd grade. Here are something you might want to know regarding to our kids’ learning.
1. Red class parents received my text regarding speaking Chinese in Chinese classroom. I need to clearly few things. First, why I only texted Red class parents? That is because I only mentioned this new rule to the Red class, not Blue class yet. Second, it was a general text. Some parents misunderstood that they received my text Friday because their kids spoke English in Chinese room. It might be true on some kids but not all. Third, this was first time I tried group texting and I probably won’t do it again because I found that all parents in the group text received reply texts which might be annoying to some parents. I am sorry if this was a concern.
2. For Blue class parents, you might have many ???? above your heads when you read the message above. It will be a new rule in Chinese classroom that I will text the parents when a kid speaks English in Chinese classroom. I do this because it is the beginning of school year and I want to build a positive Chinese-speaking environment in my classroom. If students have good habit of speaking Chinese in Chinese classroom, it will improve their Chinese speaking ability. When you receive my text in the future stating your kid speaks English in my classroom, please DO talk with them so they know it is serous.
3. I will re-teach math topic 1-4, addition fact patterns, on Tuesday because I found that the addition facts table is confusion to many of our kids. Also, you will find that the English math homework on Tuesday will be the same as last Friday because I will be re-teaching the topic. Thanks.
4. Second grade students will do the morning Chinese-teaching announcement to entire school every morning from Tuesday. All kids in our 2nd grade DLI class will have a chance to do it at least once during the school year. I will randomly pick two students from my morning class each week. If your kid is chosen for the week, please make sure your kid come to school on time or I will give out the chance to other students. I would recommend to come few minutes early on Monday if your kid is chosen to do the announcement this week so I can slightly teach them how to say it. This week we will have Cole and Maya from Red class to do the morning announcement.
5. I didn’t post any student pictures or videos on our class website yet because we don’t have all disclosure returning yet. If you didn’t return the disclosure to Mrs. Hansen yet, please do so as soon as you can. If you lost it, please let me know so we can have your kid bring home a new one.
6. No school on Monday, Labor Day.
7. Please visit our class website regularly so you can keep on the same page with us. Once I start to upload pictures and videos, you can ask your kid what we were doing in the picture. In this way, you can know if your kid know the purpose and content we were leaning in Chinese classroom today. Please follow the stroke order while your kid is writing Chinese homework. Click on each word for stroke order and other information about the character. - Mandarin Matrix book 2-1 我的小马在哪里 concept of where is my XXX?
- Activity: students stand in two lines (Line 1 and line 2) and face to each others. Each student will have a partner. A student ask his/her partner question of "where is my XXX?" (Students will need to say their own noun.) and the other student will need to answer "your XXX is here/there." Once they did, line 1 will need to move one step to the right and meet with a different partner and do the same conversation again.
- Where is my friends song: students sing and dance with the song
- "My family" song: Students listen to the song today and we will make a simple family tree tomorrow.
Math:
- Self-start: math addition fact practice (morning class only)
- Topic 1-4: Addition fact patterns review
- Every student has addition fact table (1-20). The teacher give students questions and students need to mark on their addition fact table to find out answers.
- Story-telling problems practice: This is first time students LISTEN to the teaching saying the problems and they will need to write down answers on their small white boards.
- School role review: The teacher shows the picture of school main members (teachers, principle, students....) and ask students their title and what they do in the school.

Cover cards and then uncover two cards, if the cards match, the student gets two cards. (Strategies: students will need to think addition to subtract and also to memorize card places.)
